TYPES OF DIAMOND FLAWS IN DIAMONDS 4C’S 

Diamonds often own unique markings – either internal (inclusions) or external (blemishes). A diamond’s clarity grade depends on the absence or presence of such inclusions.

The following lists some common terms used for diamonds’ internal and external characteristics.

External Flaws

  • Natural – unpolished surface,
    the original ‘skin’ of rough diamond
  • Cleavage or feather – inclusion along the atomic grain
  • Pit – small indentation on a flat surface
  • Fracture – irregularly shaped break
  • Cavity – opening on the surface
  • Included – inclusions within a diamond
  • Nick – minor surface chip
  • Carbon spot – included crystal
  • Grain/twinning line – irregularity in crystal growth
  • Pinpoint – small included crystal (appears white)
  • Scratch – small groove (can be due to normal wear)
  • Cloud – a group of pinpoints
  • Chip – broken along the external edge
  • Internal grain line – the visible part of the internal grain structure
  • Laser drill hole – clarity enhancements to
    remove/reduce the appearance of inclusions
  • Bearded or feathered girdle – minute to small
    hairline fracture extending from girdle into stone

The clarity grade of a diamond not only affects its value and price. It can also be a good sign of the diamond’s vulnerability. Heavily included diamonds that can be prone to breakage.

ליהלומים יש לרוב סימנים ייחודיים – פנימיים (תכלילים) או חיצוניים (פגמים). דרגת הניקיון של יהלום תלויה בהיעדר או נוכחות של תכלילים כאלה.
להלן מספר מונחים נפוצים המשמשים למאפיינים הפנימיים והחיצוניים של יהלומים.

טבעי – משטח לא מלוטש,
ה"עור" המקורי של יהלום גלם
מחשוף או נוצה – תכליל לאורך הגרגר האטומי
בור – חריטה קטנה על משטח ישר
שבר – שבר בעל צורה לא סדירה
חלל – פתח על פני השטח
מתוכלל – תכלילים בתוך יהלום
ניק – שבב על משטח קטן
כתם פחמן – קריסטל
קו גרגר/תאומים – אי סדירות בצמיחת גבישים
Pinpoint – קריסטל קטן (נראה לבן)
שריטה – חריץ קטן (יכול להיות בגלל בלאי רגיל)
ענן – קבוצה של נקודות לבנות (קריסטלים)
שבב – שבר לאורך הקצה החיצוני
גרגר פנימי קו – החלק הנראה לעין של מבנה אטומי פנימי

חור קידוח בלייזר – שיפור ניקיון
להסיר/להפחית את המראה של הפגמים השחורים

חגורת זקן או נוצה – דקה עד קטנה
שבר בקו הליטוש המשתרע מהחגורה לאבן
דרגת הניקיון של יהלום משפיעה לא רק על ערכו ומחירו אלא גם יכולה להיות סימן לפגיעה ביהלום. ליהלומים פגומים בצורה קשה אין ערך מסחרי.
